What is the proper protocol for attending a polo match, you might ask. Well, youve come to the right place. After following the game from Burbank to Buenos Aires, from Sun Valley to Spain I have come to know the many different aspects of the polo spectator, and just what you need to know to blend into the crowd.
The first concern for the novice polo spectator is what to wear. From the time we attended our first day of school we have been afraid of not dressing properly and becoming the subject of ridicule and social exile.
Although the wardrobe for polo at a top club might border on the more sophisticated side, the options for beach polo are limitless, and one of individual choice. You will find everything from cut offs to cocktail dresses. Blue jeans and blazers appear in abundance and are worn by either the very secure or the very insecure (interesting the way that works).
As you would imagine, the dressier spectators are usually in the VIP section, although there are smatterings of them throughout the venue.
The most democratic wardrobes might be found in the general admission areas, where people wander in and out, linger or leave in an ever-changing pattern.
Although stronger spirits are available, and Grey Goose Vodka is the title sponsor, champagne and wine are considered de rigor. Remember that the lighter spirits are meant to accentuate the days activities, not over power them. Gentlemen, this is an opportunity to show that you can handle social drinking. There are three players on a beach polo team. They are numbered 1, 2 and 3. These are also the positions they play. The 1 and 2 are basically forwards. The 3 is usually the best player on the team. He directs the attack using his 1 and 2 while able to fall back in defense. If you keep your eyes on the Number 3 player, he will take you to the action. So remember, if you find yourself involved in witty conversation and then turn back to the field, look for the Number 3.
Because the playing area of a beach arena is about one-tenth the size of an outdoor field, the action is dropped right into the lap of the spectator. As a result of being so close to the action, the average beach polo spectator isnt quite as reserved as one you might find in a golf gallery. There will be shouts and cheers and various instructions offered from the spectators. However, if you are a novice you should limit your outcries to simple, general comments. An enthusiastic Well done is always safe, or a subtle what a beautiful chestnut, as there is always apt to be at least one chestnut on the field, and they are always beautifully turned out, and an occasional well done is always acceptable.
